For all intent and purpose, Bruce Wayne is a terrible mentor. Untrusting, calculating- and rightfully so. But what if he was presented with a ward who had no motives? What if the would-be ward was a weapon of Kryptonian making, forged and honed never to question, never betray, only to follow orders from their general?
"A dog cannot have two masters." Alfred insisted, though he hated the analogy. It was demeaning but in the moment, it was the best comparison he could make to drive the point home for Bruce.
Bruce did not respond immediately, his face contorted in concern. "You think if Zod did come back to Earth, she would rejoin him?"
Alfred sighed deeply. "I suppose there's always the chance she would, but he is not the master...the leader she follows now. I don't think you give her the credit she deserves, nor yourself for what you have provided."
Bruce turned in his chair, an eyebrow raised at his friend. Alfred took this as the crack in the facade to press his case.
"I don't know what she needs to do to assuage your fears or convince you of her loyalty, but at some point and hopefully sooner than later, you will have to embrace that this ward is not like any other. Masters Grayson and Todd, they had very different lives and experiences than Olivia. She wasn't a broken bird to whom tragedy befell- she was clay. She did not know happiness or pain or love or loss and she sadly may never be able to embrace life the way any of us has the opportunities. Olivia was molded to obey to excel to succeed without fear objection or remorse and it's almost to Zod's credit the success of it. It may have worked too well. Because she is not a machine at her core and she had to have recognized a change in leadership in you and accepted it. She was imprisoned for so long and it was not Zod or her fellow Marines that saved her from that place. From the first day she arrived, she has accepted every order you have given. Several times at great cost to you when she might have meant the difference in keeping you safe. She has lived without question or complaint in a prison that was not meant for her. Allowed us to test her, allowed Jean to enter her mind on numerous occasions without objection,"
Bruce listened but his demeanor said he saw these behaviors as suspicious.
